How to Make Non-Toxic Cleaning Spray

Sometimes I find little tips and tricks that rock my world. A few years ago, I got the idea to ditch toxic household cleaners and start making my own. I’m still working on perfecting all of them, but the one I’ve nailed down is this non-toxic multipurpose cleaning spray.

It’s great for cutting through greasy messes on the stove and even cleaning mirrors with zero streaks. I’ve used it on my wood dining table, to get fresh stains out of carpet, and even to clean toilets.

What Makes It So Awesome

I tend to stick to things that are more natural when it comes to household products. Most store-bought cleaners have tons of harmful chemicals that I don’t want anywhere in my home. I won’t go into detail on that here. There’s tons of information on the web to be found on that subject. This multipurpose cleaning spray contains a handful of non-toxic ingredients that are antimicrobial champions.

Vodka

Vodka is a natural antiseptic. But why vodka and not rubbing alcohol? Rubbing alcohol is a respiratory irritant. It’s no more toxic than vodka, just much harsher. I want to note that it’s important for the vodka to be at least 60% alcohol, or 120 proof, in order to kill all the nasties.

Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used for centuries. They are considerably effective at killing germs, viruses and fungus. Not to mention, they smell amazing. There’s much debate on the safety of oils and at what age certain oils could be a problem. Peppermint for instance is one that several sources say you should avoid around babies and small children. I’ve been using this spray around both my children since birth and it’s not caused any problems at all. But, if I ever have to do any intense cleaning all over a room, they’re typically not around anyway.

Thieves

Thieves is a powerhouse for disinfecting jobs. It’s made by a company called Young Living and is a blend of oils such as clove, cinnamon bark and rosemary. You don’t have to buy this particular oil blend, but just make sure what you have is high quality.

Rosemary

Even though Thieves essential oil contains rosemary already, I like to add a little more to boost the scent and cleaning power. It’s a great natural antiseptic and antimicrobial.

Dish Soap

This isn’t a super critical ingredient, but I find it actually helps cut through tough grease. You might think it would leave a film on surfaces and streaks on glass, but surprisingly, it doesn’t. I prefer a plant based dish soap like Seventh Generation Free and Clear.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Spray bottle

3 cups 120 proof vodka

1 cup distilled water

1 tsp plant based dish soap

10 drops Thieves essential oil

5 drops rosemary essential oil

Instructions:

Mix all ingredients and add to a spray bottle. I love this little blue spray bottle, but I actually prefer industrial size bottles. I can mix everything together right in the bottle, shake it up and it’s ready to go.
