Fresh Blackberry Caipirinha Cocktail
If you’re looking for a bit of a different spin on a classic cocktail, this is one to try. The caipirinha is pretty exotic here in the US, but it’s gaining popularity. Blackberries make this drink exciting and bold.
Rum? Yum. This is a summer drink if I ever had one. It’s fresh, a little tart, a little sweet and just enough rum. I don’t like my drinks weak, but I don’t want them overpowered in flavor, either. Cachaça has a lovely flavor. Call me crazy, but the smell of it sometimes reminds me of bananas. You’ll have to tell me in the comments if you get that from it too.
So what is a caipirinha? A caipirinha (kai-per-een-yuh) is a traditional Brazilian cocktail made with cachaça (kuh-sha-suh), which is a spirit similar to rum. Cachaça is made with sugar cane juice, while rum is usually made with molasses, a byproduct of sugar processing.
A classic caipirinha is made with just lime juice, sugar and chachaça. This refreshing spin on a delicious classic is perfect for summer. Good food, great company, sunshine and a drink in your hand. Maybe a fire pit and a hammock. Do you feel me?

Ingredients
Blackberries
Fresh blackberries are a bit of a mystery to me. I just haven’t used them that much. I don’t particularly care for them unties they’re baked in something or made into some sort of sweet concoction. I typically like tart fruit just fine, but there’s something about blackberries I don’t love. Maybe it’s the seeds? They’re pretty woody stick in your teeth.
So why would I make a cocktail with one of the few fruits I don’t like that much? Good question. A friend of mine challenged me to come up with something using blackberries, so I did! And you know what? I love it. There’s just enough sugar added that the actual blackberry flavor comes out to shine. I really do hope you try this drink.
Cachaça
There are two main classifications of cachaça. Branca (white) and amarela (aged). Branca is distilled and stored in either glass containers or wood barrels that don’t release any color into the spirit. Amarela can either be stored for a short period of time in a barrel that imparts a yellow color into the it, or aged for a specified amount of time, making it an even darker color.
Branca, naturally, is cheaper. I have had both and I thought they tasted quite different. Leblon is the maker of the branca cachaça that I use and it’s the one that smells like bananas. Sorry to say that it’s been too long since I tasted the aged cachaça so I don’t really remember what it tasted like.
